This issue has been controversial among professional sports officials and others because many people find it invasive and harder to administer than urine testing. The fact that designer drugs like HGH is hard to detect in urine means more applied methods to test and people in the sports industries are unwilling to take the steps necessary to eliminate HGH in sports. “It’s going to be extremely hard to detect it in urine; I think the scientists all agree to that,” said David Howman, director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Howman said anti-doping officials intend to increase efficacy concerns by supplementing the current HGH test with a second test that will increase the detection window to about two weeks instead of the 24 to 48 hours after use window. To get rid of HGH U.S. professional sports leagues are now under pressure to implement HGH testing that requires athletes to draw blood from their players, which has been a pressing issue for sports leagues’ players unions. Major League Baseball already is considering implementing blood testing for HGH at the minor league level, a move that could bring about a fresh look at the issue for MLB’s players association, but it took a serious scandal with most of the league marquee players to get approval. Even than blood testing is not at the pro level.
HGH needs more stringent testing to make sports an even player field. However, it is more than just public acceptance and the need to change; there has to be an entire shift in rules and cooperation from everyone to make sports respectable again.
